PHACO

The phacoemulsification (Greek: Phakos = eye lens) is probably the most frequently performed surgery in Europe, at 3.5 million surgeries per year. This is understood as the disintegration of the core of the lens using ultrasound, as well as the subsequent extraction of debris, cells and other particles by means of an irrigation/aspiration device (I/A). This surgical technique is currently the most common and proven method for the treatment of cataracts. After removal of the lens, its refractive power is compensated by the insertion of an intraocular lens (IOL).
